JOE REED (1975)

Reed, Class of 1975, watched his first cross country meet with his dad in 1969 and saw Lakeside claim a state title. He later was a member of the cross country team from 1970-75. The Vikings won state championships in 1970, 1972 and 1973 with runner-up finishes in 1971 and 1974 with Reed as the sixth man from 1972-74.He was also a member of the track team from 1971-75, with the highlight being a team state championship in 1974. He finished third in the region in 1975 in the two-mile with a time of 9:43 and was a National Merit Finalist that same year. After graduating from Lakeside, Reed ran cross country at Georgia State University and in 1975 finished the season as the Panthers’ No. 2 runner.Reed began his teaching career in 1978 at nearby elementary schools. This allowed him to return to Lakeside to coach cross country and track from 1984-94. His teams won 17 region and two county championships and had 19 top-three county finishes and seven top-five state finishes.He returned to Lakeside as an assistant principal in 1997 before becoming the principal at Sagamore Hills from 2000-08. Reed finished his DeKalb career as Lakeside’s principal from 2009-13. His favorite task was presenting the Viking Award.
