1970 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL TEAM

Perfection. That’s what the 1970 Lakeside Vikings achieved under Hall of Fame Coach Wayman Creel in his inaugural season at the helm. The long-time Northside-Atlanta head coach took over the football program at Lakeside after 19 seasons leading the Tigers. Creel wasted no time bringing the same level of success to Lakeside, as the Vikings were able to bring home a region title and their first-ever football state title in 1970.The journey to the postseason was filled with double-digit wins as the Vikings outscored opponents 289-72 through the regular season, including two shutout victories over Henderson (26-0) and Habersham Central (34-0). The most points the Vikings ever allowed in one game was 14, a testament to Lakeside’s balance of a potent offense and formidable defense.Once in the postseason, the Vikings never faltered, and secured their championship berth with victories over Columbia (34-2) and Dalton (17-14). In the state title game, Lakeside would not be denied its first-ever title as the Vikings defeated Richmond Academy 7-6 to etch their names in the school’s history books forever.Creel would continue coaching at Lakeside until 1982, and would lead the Vikings to four more region titles (1972, 1974-75, 1978) and a state title in 1972, two years after the first. Lakeside’s Sports Hall of Fame enshrines many of the 1970 athletes who helped bring glory to the school through football.
