CHIP TARKENTON (1978)

Tarkenton, Class of 1978, was a three-sport star at Lakeside and after transferring to Lakeside in February of 1976, he played on the football, basketball, and track teams. He lettered in football twice, while also being named the Viking Award winner in his senior year. While he was great on the football field, he was even more impressive with the track team. He spent three years at Lakeside on the track team.The highlight of his high school career was setting the school record in the 100-yard dash, with a time of 9.8 seconds, a mark that stood for 20 years. Off the field, he helped found the FCA in fall of ‘76 and was president the rest of his time at Lakeside. Additionally, he was a Valhalla Yearbook Outstanding Senior and helped MC Miss Lakeside.Afterwards, he attended Western Carolina on a football and track scholarship before transferring to the University of Georgia, where he majored in Speech Communications. After college, he entered the broadcasting field. During his career he spent 26 years in local sports, including being the sports director at WRIC-TV. Additionally, he has been the football announcer for multiple major networks including ESPN and ABC. He now works as an independent broadcaster, calling play-by-play, color and working sidelines for Old Dominion home games and select VMI games.


FRED MANGET (1969)

Manget, Class of 1969, lettered in football, track (twice) and soccer, was the assistant editor for sports for the 1969 yearbook, and won the AAA regional essay contest during his time at Lakeside.He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of Georgia in 1973, graduating summa cum laude, with General Honors and Honors in Political Science, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He went to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar and received the MA (Oxon.) degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. He received his JD degree from Vanderbilt University School of Law in 1979, where he was a Patrick Wilson Scholar.Manget spent 26 years with the Central Intelligence Agency and served for 18 years in the Senior Intelligence Service. He served as Deputy General Counsel, Acting Director of Congressional Affairs, Legal Counsel to the Directorate of Intelligence and the Director of Central Intelligence (DCI) Counterintelligence, Counterterrorist, and Terrorist Threat Integration Centers, Chief of the Intelligence Support Division, and Chair of the Publications Review Board. He received the Attorney General Distinguished Service Award in 2002. He spent 38 years in the military reserves and retired in 2005 as a Colonel in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General Corps. He was a scholarship cadet and a Distinguished Graduate of the U.S. Air Force ROTC program.
