BRUNO WILLIAMS (1987)

Williams, Class of 1987, was a two-time varsity letterman at Lakeside in both football and baseball. Williams played football starting in eighth grade and began playing baseball as a freshman. On the gridiron, Williams didn’t earn a starting spot until his senior season in 1986, becoming the Vikings starting quarterback.   Coached by Phil Lindsey, the 1986 Vikings team went 12-2, earning a semifinal berth before being defeated by Villa Rica. Williams took home the ‘Captains Award’ by season's end, an award voted on by his peers.In baseball, Williams started as a junior and amassed a batting average of over .400. As a senior, Williams became the 1987 DeKalb County hitting champion and co-home run leader, totaling a .533 average, nine home runs and 40 RBIs. His performance earned him honors such as captain and MVP of the team, AJC All-State honors as well as earning a spot to play in the 1987 Metro Atlanta Dugout Club All-Star Game. Williams earned a full scholarship to Southern University, continuing his baseball career. He became a four-year starter, hitting for .344  along with 11 home runs and 82 RBIs. Williams earned honors such as SWAC All-Conference teams multiple times, as a first-teamer in 1990 and second-teamer in 1991. After graduating with a Psychology degree, Williams had three children: Kamryn, Nadia and Norah.



BILL NEWSOME (1983)

Newsome, Class of 1983, was a multi-sport athlete at Lakeside, lettering in volleyball (1981), basketball (1981-1983) and baseball (1982 –1983). He served as the Co-Captain of the 19-5 basketball team his senior year and was the starting first baseman on the 1983 baseball team that advanced to the AAAA semifinals.After starting his teaching and coaching career at Avondale High school in 1987, Newsome came “home” to Lakeside to teach and coach. While at Lakeside, Newsome coached baseball as an assistant from 2000-2003 and took over the program in 2004. He compiled a 197-130-2 career record, the winningest baseball coach in Lakeside history.He was named 2008 DeKalb County Coach of the Year and Region Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2010. He coached softball and helped the baseball program with improvements to the facility with the 3,200 square foot indoor hitting space, locker room and coaches’ office.Newsome was on the Decatur baseball staff and was named the Georgia Dugout Club Assistant Coach of the Year in 2021. After five years at Decatur, Newsome returned to Lakeside to finish his coaching career—serving as an assistant coach from 2022-2024. During his 37 years at Avondale, Decatur and Lakeside, Newsome coached in over 900 high school baseball games, was part of nine region championships and coached in 16 state baseball tournaments.



SCOTT MAUGHON (1977)

Maughon, Class of 1977, was a three-sport athlete earning six letters – two in basketball, two in football and two in baseball – and was awarded the Viking Award as a senior in both basketball and baseball.As a senior, he was awarded the Coaches Award in football and as a junior on the baseball field, he helped Lakeside win the Atlanta Dugout Classic as an infielder and a pitcher. He was named Player of the Week his senior year, and was selected to play in the Atlanta East/West All-Star Game at old Fulton County Stadium. He hit .511 as a senior while receiving both best hitter and best pitcher awards. He was selected by the DeKalb Extra as “one of the best” all-around athletes in DeKalb his senior year.After graduating, Maughon earned a scholarship to pitch at the University of Georgia and compiled an 11-2 record while earning four letters and receiving the academic award his senior year. Upon graduation he attended medical school and completed an orthopedic residency and was then selected to train under world renowned sports surgeon James R. Andrews.He resides in Johns Creek and works at Emory as a sports medicine surgeon. He is married to Laurie Walker of Norcross and together, they have two grown children in Ansley and Ty.



BRIAN HANNON (1976)

Hannon, Class of 1976, was a two-sport athlete in basketball and baseball. As captain, he set records including the most assists in a single game with 13 and ranked eighth in all-time scoring with 568 points. He had the highest career assist average (6.4) in school history.His defensive skills earned him the DeKalb County Defensive Player of the Year Award, selection to the Defensive Team of the Year, and recognition as the Atlanta Tip-Off Club Player of the Month. He was honored seven times as a member of the “Team of the Week”. He averaged 13 points, 6.4 assists, and five steals per game, leading the Vikings to a 23-6 record, resulting in a quarterfinals appearance.In baseball, Hannon was a standout catcher and was named Atlanta Dugout Club Player of the Week multiple times. He played a key role in the Vikings’ 1976 Atlanta Dugout Classic Championship. His talents earned him a full basketball and baseball scholarship to DeKalb Junior College, where he received the Hollingsworth Trophy for excellence, awarded to the most outstanding athlete. He accepted a baseball scholarship to Georgia State University, where he set a school record for 50-consecutive errorless games as a left fielder.Hannon married the love of his life, Sherri Hammett Hannon. They have been together for over 40 years and have four wonderful children.
