Sturken, Class of 1985, was a four-year starter and two-time team captain during her varsity career with the Vikings. She played basketball during her eighth and ninth-grade seasons and after earning a starting job her freshman season, switched exclusively to soccer. Sturken led the Vikings while also competing at the Club Level, representing Georgia Select for the U-16 and U-18 teams. Sturken and her Viking teammates were among the first girls varsity soccer teams established in DeKalb County. She earned a scholarship to Erskine College where she played four years for the Flying Fleet and reached the NAIA championship where they faced Berry College and former Lakeside teammate and Hall of Famer, Carol Chilton. Following graduation, Sturken coached and taught soccer locally in South Carolina before returning to Georgia to coach at Top Hat and Oglethorpe University. She earned her teaching certificate and has spent more than three decades as an educator at Dunwoody High School with 20 total years of coaching experience. Sturken has been able to play competitively, along with the occasional kick about, for over 46 years with a handful of former Vikings. She and her husband Rusty, and sons Craig and Christopher, along with the Weems Family and her soccer family known as the Flames have allowed her to enjoy and share her love for women’s soccer.
Meyer, Class of 1976, was a three-year letterman while starring on Lakeside’s state championship soccer teams. He started playing soccer in the ninth grade and competed on Lakeside’s back-to-back undefeated seasons in 1974 and 1975. During his senior season, Meyer was named team captain and earned MVP. He earned a First-Team All-State selection following the 1976 season and also received the Viking Award. Meyer received a scholarship to play at Berry College and captained the U-19 youth team Comets FC to the final eight of the national championships. He also joined Genesis FC in 1978, and has remained active since his debut. His contributions to the sport go beyond the pitch and he has served as the President of the Atlanta District Amateur Soccer League for eight years. Meyer has worked on the Board of Directors for Georgia Soccer for the same span of years in the role of Director of Player Development, a feeder system for the Olympic Development Teams. His efforts earned him Volunteer of the Year by Georgia Soccer. Meyer is currently on the Board of Directors of the Father Christmas Cup; a soccer charity event that supports families in need. He and his wife Becky have been happily married for 36 years and he is the proud father of daughter Brayton and son Win.
Coach Rick Barbe came to Lakeside in 1997 and began a 21-year career with both the soccer and cross country programs. He served as the junior varsity boys soccer coach for 10 years with over 100 wins including a perfect season in 2014. As the varsity boys soccer coach, Barbe’s teams had an 80 percent win record over nine years including four Final Four appearances. His team won the 2008 State Championship, and were ranked fourth nationally by the NSCAA. Barbe was named the AJC’s Coach of the Year as a result of the 2008 team’s accomplishments. Coach Barbe finished his career ranked as DeKalb County’s sixth-winningest coach of all-time. Coach Barbe joined the cross country program in 2003. Under his leadership, the boys team had 10 top-10 finishes at State and 10 DeKalb County Championships. The girls team finished in the top-ten seven times with six county championships. He also coached two individual state champions as well. In 2014, Barbe won the AJC’s Jerry Frazier Award for Outstanding Dedication. Barbe also coached Lakeside’s “We the People” team to six State Championships and a National Award in 2006. Coach Barbe is most proud of continuing the Lakeside tradition of excellence established by his mentors and fellow Hall of Famers Jim Mitchell and Eddie Roberts.
