Mary Willbanks, Class of 1982, was a four-year varsity basketball standout and letter earner for the Vikings. She also played volleyball her sophomore through senior seasons in addition to golf and travel softball. She was the basketball team’s captain and MVP during her junior and senior seasons. Through her 1981-82 season, she led all of DeKalb County in scoring with 427 total points, 20.3 points per game, just the second Viking to do so in school history. Willbanks also competed on the boys golf team in 1979—the same year she received the Oscar Mills Sportsmanship Award. She and her basketball teammates were named DeKalb County Tipoff Club Team of the Year in 1981-82. Willbanks played Briarcliff Community sports softball on the Briarcliff Brats travel team for 10 years before attending Stetson University and playing softball for the Hatters from 1982-85. Following the 1985 season, Willbanks joined the golf team for a season and then got into coaching shortly after graduating—serving as Stetson’s assistant softball coach from 1991-94. She remained in DeLand, Florida and has spent 34 years as a Physical Educator. During that time, she served as a high school basketball coach from 1998-2006 and also coached varsity volleyball for the 2006 season.
