Mike Cash, Class of 1970, played infield for the Lakeside baseball team. He helped lead the Vikings to a 14-2 record as a junior and a 15-8 finish during his senior year. He was named the Westminster Baseball Tournament MVP and received the prestigious Vikings Award his senior season. Cash earned a scholarship to play at Georgia Southern and competed on the first team in the program’s history to earn a spot in the College World Series in 1973. He was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 1974 Amateur Draft and spent three years playing in the Giants’ minor league system before spending one year in Major League Baseball with the Philadelphia Phillies. Cash played in 500 total games over his five seasons in Minor League Baseball and racked up 476 hits, 290 RBIs and 162 walks during his career. After his time in baseball, he spent the next 30 years in the wholesale lumber business before retiring and opening up his own smokehouse BBQ restaurant. Cash is the brother of Ron Cash, who is a member of the inaugural Lakeside Sports Hall of Fame Class. His son Kevin followed in his footsteps and played baseball, and following a playing-career of his own in Major League Baseball is currently in his seventh year managing the Tampa Bay Rays.
