Chilton, Class of 1982, was a multi-sport athlete for the Vikings on the basketball and baseball teams, and is co-winner along with his mother for the John Kicklighter Award. On the diamond, he was a three-year varsity letterman and starting outfielder. As a sophomore, Chilton batted .343 with one home run, and followed up with an improved average of .358 as a junior with five home runs and a team high 27 RBIs. His best season came as a senior, where he batted .425 and led the team with 20 stolen bases and 26 RBIs. On the basketball court, Chilton played three years for Lakeside and started his career on the eighth-grade team where he was voted Most Valuable Player. He lettered on the varsity team as a sophomore. After graduating from Lakeside, Chilton attended the University of Georgia where he earned two undergraduate degrees in Economics and Broadcast Journalism. He worked as a Sports Editor for the Douglas Neighbor and DeKalb Neighbor for 11 years. Chilton has worked as an Athletic Specialist in the DeKalb County School District Athletic Department for the past 20 years. He acts as coordinator for several sports, including baseball, wrestling, softball and cross country.
Chilton was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1936, and moved to Atlanta shortly thereafter. She attended Grady High School and played for the Knights’ tennis team. Following her graduation, Chilton attended the University of Georgia where she earned her undergraduate degree in 1958. After college, Chilton worked for WSB Radio before getting married to her husband, Jack. Together, they raised three kids in Chris, Jack and Carol, all of whom went to Lakeside where Chilton was very supportive of and involved with their athletic careers and education. Chilton continued to be active on the tennis courts, and was an original member of the ALTA tennis leagues upon their conception. She taught tennis lessons and tutored future Lakeside players at the Twin Lakes Swim and Tennis Club. Even after her children graduated, she remained active at Lakeside, attending as many sporting events as she could. She was particularly supportive of the football, soccer, baseball and basketball programs. Chilton was a true fan of the Purple and Gold, and remained a supporter of the school until her passing on November 16, 2020 at the age of 84.
