STACY SHELTON (1984)

Shelton, Class of 1984, was a four-year starter for the Vikings’ basketball team, a two-time track state champion in the 880-yard race (1983-84) and the top runner on the cross country team. While on the basketball team, Shelton scored more than 1,000 career points. On the track team, she previously held the 880-yard race state record, running a time of 2:17.16 in 1983. She was the state runner up in the one-mile race in 1983 and 1984 (with a personal best of 5:02) and placed fourth overall in the cross country state championships in 1982. Shelton was a National Honor Society member, and received a track and cross country scholarship to Georgetown University where she would become the team’s MVP in 1988. She was an honors graduate from the Columbia University School of Journalism, and Summa Cum Laude at Vermont Law School. In 2006, Shelton was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize as a member of The Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Metro Team. After 20 years in journalism, Shelton now practices law as an environmental attorney and assistant attorney general for the State of Georgia.
